The IELTS test is divided into four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The Listening and Speaking sections are the same for both the IELTS Academic and General Training tests, while the Reading and Writing sections are different.
This module is divided into 4 parts with 10 questions each which means there are 40 questions carrying one mark for each. The four listening audios are both monologues and dialogues based on social and academic conversations.
Listening test format is same for both GT and AC IELTS.
Academic version: The test taker has to find answers to different questions based on 3 long passages: each passage encompasses 11-14 questions and therefore, in total, there are 40 questions just like Listening module.
General Training version: Reading is a bit different from Academic in terms of text types there are a total of 5 texts in which 4 texts are shorter and easier than the last text. The number of questions and time duration are the same for AC and GT.
All the texts are taken from magazines, newspapers and research materials.
Note: IELTS test has no negative marking.
Academic IELTS
The test has 2 questions namely Task 1 and Task 2
Task 1- Report Writing: the test taker has to summarize the information given in the form of graphs/diagrams.
This question’s word limit is 150-180.
Task 2- Essay Writing: 250-280 words long essay is written within the time span of 40 mins. This question is same for both AC and GT.
General Training IELTS – Writing task 1 is different. The candidate has to write a letter of 150-180 words long based on the given situation. This letter could be a formal or informal one.
This is the 4th module on the IELTS exam which is same for both Academic and General Training candidates.
11-15 mins long one-on-one interview

Part 1: Introduction based questions- topics are mostly familiar
Part 2: Individual Round- describe a topic for 1-2 mins
Part 3: Discussion Questions: abstract questions are asked which can include your opinion and the examiner expects a bit extended answer
The Speaking test may not be conducted on the same day as the other three modules.
